Last Order Vol. 1,2, and 3

If you have not heard of a series of comic books called Battle Angel Alita then you’re missing out on some great epic graphic novel reads! But being under the mainstream’s radar is part of this series charm. In fact it’s one of the few titles keeping me interested to frequent the comic shops. The first 9 books were awesome and “Last Order” picks up midway through the last story arc. Yukito Kishiro (the author) breathes new life in the series by introducing a novel twist to the original ending while setting the stage for new plot points to expand upon. The illustrations are superb as always, and Alita has a more mature look to her these days. My only complaint is the infrequent release schedule of the books, especially since they (Viz Communications prints & distributes the books for the North American market) don’t offer any reliable timeframe to anticpiate future releases. *sigh* So annoying.
Otherwise, good stuff here. Battle Angel Alita: Last Order Vol.1 re-establishes the direction of the story while introducing a new cast of characters and brings back Desty Nova, Alita’s main protagonist who’s up to his usual uncanny exploits. BAA: LO vol.2 Resolves the confilict she has with Jim, the defacto heir to Desty Nova’s experiments, and explains in more depth the customs and norms of the society living up in Zalem/Tiphares. Lastly, in BAA: LO vol. 3, we’re introduced to Aba Mbadi (also known as “Trinidad”) who reveals insights about the G.E.N.E. project and Desty Nova’s connection to it. We also meet Ping Wu, a hacker, who seems to know a lot about Trinidad and clues Alita into the politics between the principal societies of the planets in the Earth’s solar system, most notably Mars, Jupiter and Venus. However, the third volume ends rather abruptly and it proved painful waiting for volume #4, which I’ll provide a synposis of in a later post.

BTW, I was purposely being vague about the stories overall as to not do too much spoilage for those that have yet to read the stories, but the general bits of the plots are there.
