STAR WARS: Episode 3

FINALLY!!!

This nonsense has ended! In the theater at atleast. Don’t get me wrong, I LOVE me some Star Wars but I’ve grown tired of all of the commercialism, hype and general fanboy-ish nay-saying that pervade these blockbuster productions. I lucked out and got to watch the film on opening night (midnight the other night) via a Fandango ticket purchase, so I was able to gain some closure with this franchise film sans the long ticket lines. Without spoiling it for those that have yet to watch the movie, I’ll share some thoughts: that mainly, I honestly felt this movie was more exciting than the last two prequels combined (Episode I was complete garbage, especially with that pod race crap and not to mention Jar-Jar…ugh) and I enjoyed it’s overall darker tone. However, there is only so much suspense it can muster especially if you’ve followed closely these series of movies since we already know what becomes of the principal characters in the next three set of films. With that said, the only real point of interest (besides all the super-duper eye candy) is discovering the specific details of what drives and motivates Anakin Skywalker to become Darth Vader, which is pretty weak.

Though I have some mixed feelings about the story, it’s the best of the three prequels by far, and I actually would be willing to see it again on the big screen…because I like to torture myself. There’s lots of light-saber action and fine performances by Ewan McGregor (Obi-wan Kenobi) and even, gasp, Hayden Christensen (Anakin Skywalker). Overall I enjoyed the film (very low expectations), and no matter who tries to diss this movie it’s still going to rake in like a gazillion dollars with or without your participation; in fact it’s an easy bet that it’ll set new box office records during it’s opening weekend.

To quote the Village Voice:
…Post–Jar Jar, our expectations have sunk so low that now fans will celebrate a film just because it doesn’t completely suck…

Simply put…shoulda’ stuck with the originals.
