25 years of Pac-Man

Oh, the memories.

Pizzerias, bars, Playland down in Times Square. These were the choice spots among many others that I would venture to get my fix of this classic arcade game. The amount of quaters and time I spent on this sucker during the eighties, and others like it, was probably enough to pay for my first year in college. I can’t believe it’s already been 25 years since Pac-Man’s debut. I feel kinda old, but mostly amazed that Pac-Man and it’s characters have been around this long and still maintains a super high popularity with people both young and old. In fact, it’s still one of the most highly sought after game for arcades to this day and is one of highest selling arcade machines of all time. And who would have ever guessed it would be one of only three video games on permanent display at the Smithsonian?! (the other two are Pong and Dragon’s Lair).

Insane.

A good website to read up on the history of Pac-Man and all it’s incarnations is at: www.ClassicGaming.cc and if you happen to spot a good deal on a Ms. Pac-Man arcade cocktail table definitely let me know.

PacMan is an all-time great game. I still have my tabletop version. But has anyone played Namco’s best conceptual game of this decade “Katamari Damacy”. http://www.namco.com/games/katamari_damacy/

Pac-Man is conceptually swell, but definately the red-headed stepchild of the far superior “Ms. Pac-Man.” That assertion, however, can be somewhat sticky, because the Ms. Pac-Man game can be altered from within the cabinet. A particular establishment can somewhat control the general speed of gameplay and, if it’s not set properly, as the tabletop I played last week in Detroit wasn’t, it’s pretty much equally slow, dull, and comparable.
