The Eagle’s Shadow

I finally finished reading this book that’s been collecting dust on my shelf since I bought it. Once I decided to sit down with it, The Eagle’s Shadow actually proved to be a quick read and offers some interesting observations from a man who travels the world frequently and specificially for this book was surveying the perception of Americans, the U.S. government and it’s cultural norms from people and countries abroad. Though the book helps to illustrate the often love/hate view of American culture and lifestyle from those living outside of it, it falls short on digging deeper into the foreign policy practices and value system of the United States. I think Mark Hertsgaard (the author) intended the book to be a starting point for a much larger discussion, and if so he has achieved that hands down; But it’s somewhat of a letdown in that it seems his “survey” of various foriegn perceptions, though diverse, is only scratching the surface. Still, again, this book is a good starting point for those of us that want to gain some sincere insights into how the rest of the world perceives Americans without feeling grossly guilty of being one.
