Lone Wolf and Cub

Over the past several months I’ve been reading a comic book series that has been re-published by Dark Horse comics called Lone Wolf and Cub (known in Japan as Kozure Ōkami 子連れ狼) and it takes place during Edo-period Japan. Basically, the story chronicles the tales of a formidable warrior, Ōgami Ittō who has vowed to destroy the Yagyū Clan to avenge the murder of his wife Asami and his disgrace from the post of serving as the Shogun’s executioner. Along with his toddler son, Daigoro, they become a powerful assassin team and wander the Japanese countryside taking on mini-quests to help fund their objective. Thus far, I’ve read the first 5 volumes and they are listed below:
- Lone Wolf and Cub Vol. 1: The Assassin’s Road
- Lone Wolf and Cub Vol. 2: The Gateless Barrier
- Lone Wolf and Cub Vol. 3: The Flute of The Fallen Tiger
- Lone Wolf and Cub Vol. 4: The Bell Warden
- Lone Wolf and Cub Vol. 5: Black Wind
I remember every now & then seeing this graphic novel in the comic book shops as a teenager. But back then I was too wrapped up in the high-octane action of X-Men, Spider-Man, and a slew of other Marvel/DC related comics to really give it the attention it deserved, let alone my limited cash. Fast forward to 2005, it’s only fitting that I would now seek out such stories as Lone Wolf and Cub to satisfy the higher standard I have these days of the comic book genere.
The story is written by series creator Kazuo Koike and illustrated by the late Goseki Kojima whom both have received numerous awards and praise for this body of work, including the prestigious Will Eisner award.

I read some of the new age one, which is a sci-fi kind of story. The art was good, but the story got a bit too drawn out, and lost my interest. I’m still trying to make it through the re-issues of the old transformers comics, those are GREAT!! I’m just to the part where the PRETENDERS come in! The PRETENDERS Jamie!!!!
