Dark Age Ahead

A book by author Jane Jacobs titled The Dark Age Ahead that discusses trends that are indicative of the decline of dominant states and culture, in this case the United States. She uses a lot of Canadian references to offer analogies to it’s American counterparts. The book was kinda slow for the first two-thirds but then picks up at the end. Of course it helped that I took a two month break to finish that last third of the book :)

Overall, I thought the book was interesting in terms of it’s broad social & economic sustainability considerations and that it had some noteworthy points. However, the writing is dry at times and it proved challenging to keep my interest after the initial chapter until the final two. I thought the author did a good job offering realistic optimism to counter balance some of the main pessimistic tones presented by the social-economic data, but it’s clear that the author feels the United States is exhibiting signature signs of decline in it’s governing & cultural structure.

Yeah man I read that too. Your right, too many Canadian references and the title suggests that it is more thought provoking than it actually is. I would really only suggest it for people that are really into the nitty gritty of economics.
