Hello 2006!

While trying to take a night time photo of the Washington monument (and a few other landmarks) I missed the official ringing in of 2006 by a few minutes. I spent New Year’s Eve day in the nation’s capitol with Angela and then the evening with some of her physicist friends 1) Amir & Haleh, 2) Kyle & Daniella, Walter and 3) Moshen along with Susan, who flew out from California for the holidays, and lastly 4) Becky & Ross who drove all the way to D.C. from Wisconsin. A great group of people these folks are and I even managed to hang on a couple of topics from their intense grey-matter profession. Amir & Haleh were also kind enough to let me crash in their hotel room for a couple hours so I could catch up on some sleep and re-energize myself to help them hunt down some New Year’s fireworks at the national mall.
But of course the official start of the new year would be remiss without a hitch: the car Angela borrowed from a friend wasn’t starting and so there we sat freezing our buns off for over an hour in the wee hours of the night until Triple-A finally showed up to give us a jump.
Other than that, I had a lot of fun touring D.C., if only briefly. I was able to visit the Smithsonian the day before but I definitely want to come back to see the other sites. Alina & Rich were very warm and inviting towards me, letting me stay with them during my short visit. I also got to meet their kids Aggie and Isaac who were just adorable beyond words. And last but not least I finally met Angela’s often talked about sister July and her brother Baron (+ his girlfriend Helen) over some dinner. Sweet kids and so far it appears they don’t think I’m too weird.
