I LOVED this arcade game as a kid and would spend many hours & quaters trying to conquer it. But it was tough to beat and I never did manage to get past the first stage of story 2, and the last time I played it was some many moons ago. Enter Bobby: He happened to have it in a retro collection set for PlayStation 2 and knew of a few cheat codes to help us finally beat this classic action side-scroller.
With invisibility and the elimination of the time meter we smelled a steamrolling victory. NOT! We spent 3+ hours trying to cheat our way to the finish line only to have doubts of success right before the pinnacle of victory. After stage 2 of story 2 the game just got so ridiculously difficult that there was no #!?#@!! way ANYONE could beat the game if you played it fair in the coin-op. To even get to the final stage to rescue the damsel-in-distress you had to dodge damn near fifty frigging baddies plus their bullets and bombs, while not getting eaten by mutant bats and gremlins — ALL AT THE SAME TIME!!! And don’t even mention the panthers. Geez. We almost ran out of continues because we couldn’t figure out at first the timing on how to dodge the flame people in stage 2.3 in the lava pits. And when we do actually get to the final boss we have no bullets left in our gat so our piece is shooting one bullet real…ly….slow. We could’ve had the machine gun at this point and there was still no way you could beat the guy without the invisibility cheat (especially after all of the trama you’d have to endure just to get there) because he’s running after you non-stop and you can’t really jump over him without touching him.
I was so elated after I put the final baddie to rest because never in my sane mind will I play this again. This game is basically impossible to beat straight up and it might cause a hemorrhage to think of how many hours and money would be wasted just to get a sniff of the finish line in the arcade. I cheated to beat this game and IT WAS STILL HARD! Bobby had all but given up until I got us past the lava stage. But to add insult to injury the ending was weaker than a EA Sports finale. What a jip.

Hmmmmm. I prefer Rolling Thunder “The Ride” at Six Flags (circa ‘89).
