The National Gallery

Accompanied by a few of the greek students in my program, I took a trek to The National Gallery to the tune of my favorite admission price: FREE! The day was 70% cloudy but every now and then the sun would break free of the clouds for a bit. Some stunning views of the Palace of Westminster, including Big Ben, can been seen from the main entrance of the musuem. The National Gallery is in Trafalgar Square and this street has quite some history associated with it. Among other things, a monument in tribute to Admiral Horatio Nelson (called Nelson’s Column) is the most prominent feature on the plaza. He helped push back the French during the Napoleonic Wars and is considered Britian’s greatest naval hero, and arguably the greatest field commander that ever lived.

The museum’s main exhibition “Tom Hunter: Living in Hell and Other Stories” featured some photographic works of ordinary folks living in Hackney and often mimicked famous paintings in composition. Some grade school tours were going on so it kinda dampend the mood as the kids were loud and seemingly everywhere. Agelos and I lost Eleni & Stergiani in the museum so we stepped outside to grab something to eat and later meet up with them at Garfunkel’s near Oxford street. Apparently, there was some famous Chinese/Japanese female celebrity and the street was jammed pack with rabid fans but luckily, the street had cleared out by the time we were leaving the cafe. Easily, the highlight of the day was this video of a Michael Jackson street impersonator near the National Gallery. HILARIOUS!!!
