Filed Under: England, The Usual Rant

Aaron James Draplin, a fellow MCAD alumn and the head honcho of the DDC was in London taking a break from his Munich tradeshow exhibition and rang me up for a night about the town. The last time I saw Draplin was waaaaaaaaaay back when (back in Minneapolis I think) so it was definitely a treat to see him in the flesh again. We meet up over by my school and then headed over to Leceister Square looking for eats, settling on some Indian food, Draplin’s treat. Over dinner we chatted it up with topics ranging from MCAD to how he twisted his ankle the day before, and it was just great to hear how well he is doing both in life and in the design world — Aaron is that rare breed, being both super talented and super humble with lots of charisma and good engery all in one package. What an inspiration. As we farted around the city’s main shopping district for a little bit that’s when Draplin pointed out one of his latest design gigs: the new Nike Air Max 360 logo. It was featured prominently in a storefront display along Oxford Street and I just thought that was the kooliest thing. Go Aaron!
Unfortunately I still don’t know London quite that well yet so I couldn’t show him around much, but it was interesting to note how with my Jamaican track-jacket on the attention I attracted as we walked around — this one random dude try to sell me, no joke, cocaine, crack, weed, extacy, and heroin all in one breath! Crackeheads are worldwide I tell ya. Yet, despite his hobbled foot, Aaron got a kick out of that (ooh, that was bad) and it sounded like he enjoyed himself the four days he was here in bloke-ville. Hopefully it won’t be years before I see the guy again, in the meantime we have our Gocco kits to drop each other a line.
