Mid-Western Greek in London

Another MCAD alumni strolled into London town, and this time it was Andy Maniotes who was representing. I caught up with Andy a couple weeks back and we meet up several times along with some of his students whom I also gave a brief presentation of my past work to, offering them some perspective of professional practice as well as that of an american studying abroad.

Andy teaches graphic design now at a state school just outside of Detroit and this year was the second in a row in which he has brought his students to check out life at an overseas art & design college. Coincidently enough he knows Teal Triggs who is also a faculty member of my Master’s program here at LCC. It’s partly through that connection he’s been successful at setting up these spring “field trips” for his students, and Andy intends to do more of them in the future.

Although there were some coordination issues since he didn’t have a mobile phone with him the entire 3 weeks he was here, we still managed to get together a few times none the less. The first night hanging out was over in Chelsea, at a pub where this older gentleman had no problem sharing his expertise on what constituted properly brewed beer, and boy did this guy know his stuff! After a couple of interactions at LCC, we meet up again at Waxy O’Conner’s in Leicester square where Andy practically fell in love with my classmate’s cousin and also showed off his recent tatoo.

But all in all, it was a mix of MCAD nostalgia along with life updates as I haven’t seen Andy much, if at all, since we graduated. It was good to see that Andy has been doing really well for himself since then. He was also planning to visit Greece straight from London to get in touch with his roots and hang with some family, so I introduced him to a few of my Greek classmates to assist him in gleaning any knowledge that might be useful. Greeks are kool people, with great culture and yummy food; hopefully Andy can bring some of the motherlands’ style & flare back with him to the states, least he turn into a nomad.
