A couple of hours after the Paul Antonio lectures I went upstairs to checkout the Jonathan Barnbrook lecture. It was the first time I’ve seen what he looks like, let alone see him in person. He’s a renowned british typographer and I’ve always heard interesting things about him even way back as an undergrad, so I figured I cough up the 3 quid and see what he had to say. Surprisingly he’s very anti-corporate, more than I thought, and very vocal about it. I found that I was less interested in the work itself but rather his personality, especially how he has managed his business & clients and over the years. Barnbrook seems like a standup guy, and I would imagine it would be great opportunity to work with his studio. He had a lot of humorous inside commentary, some of it being somewhat self-depreciating, but you could tell he enjoys what he does and is passionate about his work, even if he still feel miffed by infractions that happened years ago with former collaborators.
