During my typography elective, master calligrapher (and ballet dancer & soprano) Paul Antonio graced us with his impeccable craftsmanship of typographic specimens. It was both intimidating and mesmerizing as you watched the guy create these esoteric letterforms from years past all the while as he ran down the history of writing systems spanning back at least 6,000 years ago. The guy knew his stuff and there was no question he was a perfectionist, and proud of it. A bit over the top at times but definitely worthwhile none the less.
After his double lecture, one in the morning, the other in the afternoon I had to re-think my typographic sensibilities and figured I best brush up on those skills again while I’m back in school and have the opportunity to do so. But despite some self-consciousness of my handwriting afterwards, for better or for worse, my chicken scratch is here to stay.
