Superman Returns

I finally checked out the new Superman movie on the big screen yesterday and I must say I was impressed.

Kevin Spacey was great as Lex Luthor, and the new Lois Lane and Man of Steel where both excellent. Frank Langella as Perry White gets honorable mention. And the visuals are really stunning, with a 50’s flair to it….very cool.

Of course there are some sprinkles of cheese in the film (they’re actually not that bad) but I felt the story was really well thought out and kept your interest throughout, especially an intriguing love triangle and the fact that Lois Lane now has a kid. The special effects were really good too, almost making it seem like the comic book was simply coming alive. I thought after nearly twenty years of a big screeen absence that this latest Superman film was top notch from start to finish. And the homage to previous films was a nice touch specifically the theme music, opening credits and the Marlon Brando cameo.

If I have any complaints about the movie it took the form of a ghetto-fab theater I saw it in with people taking calls during the movie, some ass-clown behind me translating (loudly) the movie to their buddy and someone’s laaaaaaaaame ring tone going off for a painful 16 seconds. What the hell is wrong with people?! But I guess you just can’t get that “movie going experience” on cable.

Funny side note: Because it was still a bit early, the usher had us wait by him before admitting people into the theater. When I noticed to über-dorks being let in, I asked the usher “so hey, are we finally up, up and away?!” a clever reference to an old Superman motto I thought. This guy, after three times repeating the phrase in response to his “what?!” still just didn’t get it. His usher buddy behind him totally did and was giggling non-stop. Geez, am I that old about this stuff now?!

I had SuperMan underoos (they were the only ones that would fit my SUPER…). But when I was a child, I acted like a child and when I was a man…you get the picture. Ha, ha, ha.
