St. Paul’s & Tate Modern

Today was cold, cold, and COLD! I don’t know what’s going here lately but the temperature in London this past week has just been dropping with each passing day. Today’s tourist trap stop was St. Paul’s Cathedral. It’s much bigger than it first appears on the outside, and I learned that the current cathedral is actually the fifth incarnation of it, being only a few hundred years old while the very first St. Paul’s Cathedral dates back to 604 AD.

Somehow Bobby managed to get grandma to climb the narrow spiral staircase up to cupola. No elevators were availble and all I could hear for the next 15-20 on the way up was how she couldn’t understand how the architects didn’t think to include an elevator in the place. The view from above is spectacular but to get to the very top you had to walk another 250 steps. Grandma wasn’t feeling that extra hike and so we headed back down, eventually onto the crypts while Bobby went further up.

After St. Paul’s, we headed towards the Millennium Bridge milimniuem and made a stop inside the College of Arms to chat up the experts on how to get an English coat of arms commissioned. The two genetleman that talked to us were very knowledgeable and helpful. But as hard as I tried, I just couldn’t get the older bloke to reveal his “as authentically English as can be” pub sources here in London. Bugger.

The last stop was at the Tate Modern where we mostly relaxed at the cafe and then just strolled around the museum looking at the free exhibitions. No more tickets were avaliable for the 6 story high slide but it was still quite a view to see from the ground level entrance. Hopefully before Bobby leaves we’ll get to go down this bad boy.

The slide looks like loads of fun! Too bad I didnt know it was there when I was in the neighborhood. Darnit! Your Grandma’s a superstar for getting up to the cupola. I need to visit St Pauls too…
