Tower of London

Continuing to play tourist with the family, today we headed over to the famous Tower of London, most often confused with Tower Bridge which is just across the way spanning the Thames River.
Upon buying our tickets Bobby was eager to use the “unemployed” concessions price for himself (just £3 off the steap £15 admission price) of which he almost managed to piss off the guy working inside the box office. Having no shame about fraudulently proclaiming himself “unemployed”, Bobby just kept repeating proudly “3 concessions please” not understanding that he still had to describe which concessions he was claiming before he could be sold the tickets by the clearly annoyed ticket clerk at having to repeat himself several times already.
When we finally reach the admission gates, the Beefeater guardsmen are doing their customary bag search. Amazingly, as one of them briefly scans what’s inside my grandmother’s little handbag the dolt breaks the zipper on it! Immediately the guardsmen says “looks good” and gestures that we can enter in some lame attempt to distract attention from the fact that he just broke the bag. I would have had to put the beat-down on the guy, and not particularily because I wanted too, but mostly because my grandmother’s spanglish chants of “PENDAJO, QUE ESTUPIDO, SO IDIOT…” would have gone on endlessly all day had I not manage to fix the bag immediately.
*sigh*
Now that we were actually INSIDE the freaking Tower of London we got ourselves an electronic audio guide and just tried to see as much as we could before they were scheduled to close in a few hours. Some highlights were the Crown Jewels, Traitor’s Gate and the White Tower. Hordes of ravens could be seen everywhere as an old legend holds that once the ravens no longer come to the tower grounds the monarchy will fall; so all previous monarchs up to the present make sure the ravens feel right at home with some pre-made lodgings just for them.
Afterwards, we stopped to get some coffee & snacks and little did I expect to bump into Sabika working at Ben & Jerry’s! We chatted for a little bit and then we headed off to walk over the extremely foggy Tower Bridge on our way to catch some dinner. With all the walking we’ve done since her arrivial, by the time grandma gets back to New York she’ll be ready to run the NYC marathon; them legs just don’t quit!

Thanks so much for the update! This is the best recap we’ve gotten about their trip. So, now, what’s the real reason you want to stay in London another year? Hmmmm????
We miss you! Take care & keep us posted. We assume more details will follow once you are sure of your path.

Who looks more austere - gran or the guard?
I had such nightmares after visiting the Tower’s museum of medieval torture devices. *shudder* Sounds like you were sparred do to time constraints. Cheery!
At least they spare you the heads on pikes, bodies ensconsed in gibbets and other assorted “decorations” of the City Walls. Do you see any of the graffitti scrawled by some of the more infamous prisoners? Bess #1 for example? Such times they were …

hmm… that’s like the worst pictures of me ever!
