Saddam Executed

And so the saga of Saddam Hussein ended today with the Iraqi government putting the former dictator to death by hanging for crimes committed in the 1980’s. Though I doubt very few will miss the man much, the whole process of which lead to his capture and subsequent trial has been a diaster from the start.

Also dishearting to note is the questionable use of capital punishment here. The fact that people still allow this to happen is terrible, and no matter how bad those being brought to justice are they still shouldn’t be executed. Because once you realize a mistake has been made it can’t be corrected.

I’m not suggesting Saddam was innocent regarding the allegations against him. He should be brought to justice and locked up for sure. Just not executed I believe; him or anybody else for that matter. There’s far too many people locked up in prison for petty crimes and not enough of the real criminals (gangsters, corporate raiders & some politicians alike) being placed behind bars. This is what sickens me most about capital punishment: it’s abused and manipulated by society’s elites. The power to decide who lives and dies is far too great a power to be left alone to state officials to administer.

I’m curious to hear what other people think about how fair Saddam’s execution was and what people opinions are regarding the use of capital punsihment in general. Should we as a “civilized” society still allow the state to sentence people to death???
