I AM LEGEND

I Am Legend movie poster

I already thought the movie’s title was odd enough, but in general I Am Legend is an strange movie with more plot holes than a block of swiss cheese.

Okay, it isn’t THAT bad, but it did leave some sensible major questions unanswered in favor of moving the plot speedily along such as HOW EXACTLY did Anna save the story’s main character Robert Neville (played by Will Smith) from certain death with his fight with those pesky “zompires”? And how did Neville have the means to fortify every orifice of his house?? And when was he actually going to cook that bacon if Anna didn’t do it, never mind where he got it from?! But my favorite jab at the movie is how it apparently cost $5 million dollars to film the scene of the Brooklyn Bridge being destroyed which a) doesn’t make any sense in the real world regarding the film’s production as it seems like an outrageously impractical sum of money to shoot that 30 second scene for and b) it doesn’t even make sense in it’s own fictional world as how does blowing up the landmark prevent a city wide panic and curtail the spread of the infected? I’m not buying it.

The movie is based on a 1950’s novel by Richard Matheson that has already spawned three movie adaptations prior to this latest version. I think Will Smith gives a great performance as a man coping with his loneliness as he tries desperately to find a cure to the epidemic and to save humanity, or whatever is left of it. But ultimately the movie is just average once you peel back the kool factor of seeing a desolate New York City overrunned by relentless weeds and Bronx Zoo escapees.

I personally felt that the plot was so non-linear that it felt unfinished. The bacon was saved for a special event like if he ever took home that hot mannequin from Tower Records.

After seeing I am Legend, the holes in the plot were the only thing I could think of. Swiss cheese is right. Anyways, Jamie already covered most of the holes - so I´ll take a different angle.

The main redeeming factor was having seen it in New York - so it was a kind of abstract-quasi-nightmar-ish summary of the day. The second is that it made me watch the other movies that led to it.

The Last Man on Earth 1964
Vincent Price - No guns - no recognizable city in peril - no specific reason for the plague - Just vampires with bad makeup, garlic, smoke and mirror special effects. It makes killing zombies seem like childs play - well maybe bad sex would be a better comparison.

Omega Man 1971
Holy Moses - Charlton Heston had one hell of a script. One-liners - over and over and over and over. So many, it is almost painful to watch. The NRA must have loved the film - when you see how many different automatic weapons he has. That being said, it does have its moments - and I highly recommend it to anyone who likes 70s hollywood and seeing zombies who wear whiteface, sunglasses, and black cloaks. Or anyone who liked the original Foxy Brown - not that Rosalind Cash can hold a candle to Pam Grier.

One important difference which isn´t included in I Am Legend but takes place in both of the previous versions is a coherent discussion between the zombies and the scientist (Will Smith). Somehow, deleting it does seem a guantanamo kind of thing to do. Maybe that change came as an influence from 28 Days Later.

If any other films which seem to be obvious influences on I am Legend (other than The Last Man on Earth or Omega Man) then they are Quiet Earth and 28 Days Later.
