Ulli & Kiyo in NYC

Kiyo & Ulli reading a book on baby names.

My good friends Kiyo & Ulli were in town for one last day here in New York, on the very same day that I just got back from California so you know I had to meet up with them, if only briefly, before they would fly back to Düsseldorf.

Right before I met up with Kiyo at the City Bakery I got into a nasty “wrong number” exchange when attempting to call him and as I tried to expalin to Kiyo later what happened he was good in getting me to calm down and just forget about it. Mostly because he didn’t give a sh-t, as ultimately it was a silly episode, but hey, that’s what friends are for, right?!

We rapped for a bit talking shop and catching up on things before Ulli arrived to join in on the fun. She didn’t mind at all my keen, yet oh-so subtle, observation that she is now 6 months pregnant! I even tried to lobby to have them name their Axis-power child after me to no avail, but hey…that’s what friends are for!

(BTW, notice Kiyo’s extended middle finger holding the book… it’s so obvious he misses me, A LOT.)

Since Ulli was busy being pregnant and expecting another friend to drop by the bakery Kiyo, being the great husband that he is, decided it was best to just leave his wife behind and meet up with another MCAD buddy Jonathan Keller. Because that’s how “he rolls, dawg.” Thirty minutes later the three of us are hanging in the soaking rain waiting for Ulli to show up so we can watch their friend Sarah (sp?) practice some of her arial dance moves in some non-descript mid-town gymnasium; my back & groin was hurting from watching them pull off some of those sequences. But later on Jonathan’s story about how his glasses got crushed in a fit of anti Mid-Westerner rage on the Lower East Side was all too funny and provided the necessary distraction from my aforementioned pain.

Of course it was too brief, yet I’m glad I had the chance to see Kiyo & Ulli while they were in Manhattan especially since I know they were super busy being rockstars here in the USA. A bit last minute, but hey, THAT’S WHAT GOOD FRIENDS ARE FOR!!!!
