“This is no time for Congress to abandon practices that have a proven track record of keeping America safe.”
— George W. Bush, on why he vetoed legislation yesterday that would have banned the CIA utilizing harsh interrogation tactics.
This is no surprise from Dubya & Co., because of all the legal ramifications that could stem from outlawing waterboarding which could ultimately lead to the criminal prosecution of U.S. President George W. Bush and his associates as well. By vetoing the bill yesterday, Dubya has essentially put the icing on his dubious tenure as head of state.
A few weeks ago I happened to have read an excellent op-ed piece from the N.Y. Times by Morris Davis, a former chief prosecutor at Guantanamo titled “Unforgivable Behavior, Inadmissible Evidence” and he makes the strong case about how these tactics have only undermined the U.S.’s moral authority, as well as making the country and it’s citizens less safe since the information gleaned from these methods are actually less reliable in the effort to prevent plausible future terrorist attacks.
Go figure.
