Guggenheim Club Party

Cai Guo-Qiang's car bomb installation

After missing out on seeing Iron Man I salvaged yesterday’s fun by meeting up with Jason for a club/dance party event over at the Guggenheim Museum. It’s interesting how they take the art museum and turn it into a club for a night, and I think it’s a clever idea, especially for people who are into art as well which makes it feel like a double adventure squeezed into one.

On exhibition was Cai Guo-Qiang’s I Want to Believe that features a lot of his works created with gunpowder. I wasn’t really too impressed at first until I saw some video documentation of the process and then I was completely blown away (no pun intended) by how meticulous it was to create these pieces and thus gained a better appreciation for his work. Speaking of blowing up, the first thing you see upon entering the museum is series of cars suspended from the ceiling with lighted tubes sticking out of each life size Dodge Neon car, which is basically representing a car exploding from a bomb in sequence. Very trippy.

As for the party itself, I wasn’t really feeling it too much. The music selection wasn’t all that, and often it was too crowded with people rudely bumping into you without any regard; that got annoying fast. Certainly having Jason’s company keep things kosher though overall. I also enjoyed chatting up a visiting (but married) German dermatologist who was very sweet and personable,; unfortunately I already forgot her Berlin club recommendations. And as we were leaving the museum to end the night Jason bummed a cigarette off of a touristy Greek couple and they too were a treat to socialize with for a spell.

Of course the night didn’t end there, as Jason & I headed back to the Upper West Side and chilled out at some jazz bar to end the night gracefully.
