In the spirit of celebrating the birthday of the United States I’ve complied a list of songs that I’d like to share with you all. Certainly not an exhaustive list by any means, but the selection below I feel does a good job representing the reality of the American experiment, our history as a country, and the single greatest gift it has offered the world at large, regardless of all the messy & unpleasant details — hope.
01. American Bullshit - George Carlin
02. Inner City Blues - Marvin Gaye
03. No Justice - Smith & Mighty
04. So much trouble in the world - Bob Marley
05. (Who Discovered) America? - Ozomatli
06. Mississippi Goddamn - Nina Simone
07. Corporate Welfare - Howard Zinn
08. The Border - Los Mocosos
09. A Foreigner No Longer - King Britt
10. Remind My Soul - Akrobatik
11. None of us are free - Solomon Burke
12. Red, White and Blues - Goapele
13. Amerimacka - Thievery Corporation
14. Why? - Tracy Chapman
15. Easy to be Heard - Lynn Kellogg
16. Peace Train - Cat Stevens
17. Blowing in the Wind - Bob Dylan
18. Give the people What They Want - The O’Jays
19. War - Edwin Starr
20. We Shall Overcome - Mathalia Jackson
You can scour the record shops, iTunes or the internet for these tracks or simply download them all here. Enjoy!
(And big ups to LNG for exposing me to several of these songs some years ago; keep on spreading your golden nuggets of truth.)
