The man born Theodore DeReese Pendergrass, better known as “Teddy” passed away earlier today. I was too young to appreciate his mojo for what it was at the time (when the ladies are throwing their panties on the stage as you sing, you are a stud bar none) but I gradually discovered his soulful music over the years when recognizing his sampled baselines in various forms — one of my favorites being the hook DJ Sneak used in “You Can’t Hide From Your Bud” which is actually from Teddy Pendergrasses’ backbeat for “You Can’t Hide From Yourself”, simply genius on both their parts.

His story is a bit sad because not only was he just 59 years old, but Mr. Pendergrass was left paralyzed after a car accident in 1982, which thus impacted his singing career to develop much further. But he was legendary in his heyday of the 1970’s and will live on through his great music and continue to swoon his audiences the world over.
